Pointe Coupee Parish is located 30 miles North West of Baton Rouge and directly across the Mississippi River from St. Francisville, Louisiana. Pointe Coupee was one of the first settled areas along the Mississippi River and one of the Six Original Parishes (Counties) in the District of New Orleans established immediately after the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803.
Pointe Coupee offers Family Style Mardi Gras with two parades on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Day), Christmas Parades, Ante-Bellum Homes, Fishing Rodeos, Power Boat Racing, Cajun, French, Old South, Creole and many other Cuisine's, Scenic Routes, Antiques, Lodging, Bed & Breakfasts, Camps, Camping, Camp Grounds, Events Calendar, History, Agricultural and Wildlife Settings, Hiking, Biking, Auto Tours, etc.
French Canadian, Sieur d'Iberville, and his brother, Sieur d'Bienville, set sail from La Rochelle, France September 1698 to explore the lower Mississippi River and establish a colony for King Louis XIV. The expedition discovered a point where the meandering river doubled back on itself, forming a huge oxbow lake. The party went ashore and Iberville's Indian guides led him along a six foot wide stream through the dense forest. Stepping out of the woods, the explorer was amazed to find himself once again standing on the banks of the Mississippi River. It was like a secret passage - a short cut that saved them a distance of ten leagues (30 miles) which is quite a savings when paddling upstream. The small stream Iberville had followed was nature's way of finding a shorter distance between two points.
Eventually, the small stream widened to become the main riverbed and both ends of the giant oxbow slowly filled in, forming a 22 mile long lake, one of our four "Rivers". This lake was called Fausse Riviere or False River and the cut point across which the Mississippi River now flowed became known as Pointe Coupee. Our second "River", Old River, is less developed and pretty much like nature made it, wild and natural. It was also formed when the Mississippi River found a shorter route and is located 15 miles northwest of False River. Atchafalaya forms the North and Western boundaries of the parish and was formed as the Mississippi sought a shorter and steeper course to the Gulf of Mexico. And last, but certainly not least, is Mississippi our Fourth and North America's Biggest River, offering scenic views, fishing, ferry boat rides, transportation and drainage for the entire central U.S.. Bon Voyage!.
P.S. Much of our WebSite is complete, but we still have some construction to complete as we continue our efforts to include all the interesting things there are to do and see in Pointe Coupee Parish.
